No to billionaires bailout and Wall Street scams: protest in DC for real economic recovery!

The Wall Street "crisis" is on - right. The rich steal, trick the poor and now they expect us to clean their mess with our taxes. Since they can't get their money right away - the US Congress is just playing hard to get but they will go on to vote for it soon - now the bankers are creating fears so people think that if they go broke, then we all will be affected badly.

Maybe we will be affected but maybe it won't be so bad. Perhaps this is necessary, because it looks like the US economy is failing and the end of the American empire is coming soon.

And as it has always been, decadence brings humanity into a new age. So maybe this is time for a real change -not talking about Obama here- a transformation that will end corrupt and savage capitalism for once.

Because meanwhile the United Nations nations have collected $16 billion dollars for the Goals of the Millennium Development program -to get 500 million people out of extreme poverty by 2015- the bankers of Wall Street want $700 billion dollars for their own pockets, when they already have way too much!

With that money the world can disappear world poverty now!

So in this day, we are either begin a really hard time in human history, or we will build another kind of society. I say no people, don't let the rich guys get more power and get richer than ever. Bush and his friends should not get away with their abuses any more.

Tomorrow we must stand up and say NO TO THE BILLIONAIRES BAILOUT!

Join DC Jobs with Justice and allies in the struggle for social and economic justice to demand REAL economic reform that puts Main Street before Wall Street.

WHAT: As part of a national day of action, "Billionaires for the Bailout" are meeting in the heart of Washington D.C. and making a special visit to their favorite banks that stand to make a profit from the proposed bailout.

Come join the crowd of community members saying NO to the Billionaire's proposal and YES to a real economic recovery package.

    WHEN: Wednesday, October 1st
    12pm-1pm

WHERE: Farragut Square - near 17th St NW
Washington, DC (outside Bank of America)

WHO: DC Jobs with Justice coalition members, faith leaders, civic leaders, students, community members, and people opposing the proposed bailout

VISUALS: Signs, Banners, "Stop Corporate Greed" posters, and lively street theater!

This week, in a "fast-tracked" process similar to the one that brought us the Patriot Act, Congress tried to pass a horrendous give-away package to greedy and unscrupulous bankers and corporate interests who created the conditions and mess we're currently in. In a time when America wants a new direction, new politics, and new ideas to move us forward, we're seeing Washington play their same old-games at the expense of the American taxpayer.

    This Wednesday, labor, faith, student, and community activists will hold protest actions across the country to demand No Wall Street Bailout and call for a real Main-Street-First economic recovery plan instead. For a listing of events visit;

Rain in DC and Go-Go Music

I recorded this from the Starbucks located at Chinatown-Gallery Place NW, DC. It was a nice Sunday afternoon in the middle of Summer 2007 when the rain started to pour really hard. People kept running and hiding themselves from water.

Why?

I don't know. I just love rain, water is life. Most of times.

Go-go music is a genre that originated from Funk and Afro Caribbean rythms, and it was born in DC. This song is titled "Family Affair" sang by the legendary Chuck Brown.

..

By the way, I was at the concert by Chuck Brown at the Kennedy Center, earlier this month. It was like being in a ritual, really: people danced and sang non stop for over 2 hours. I have some videos coming up - but my time is really short right now!

A letter from a Peace Corp volunteer and a video about the US role in Bolivia's crisis

The Andean Information Network - AIN, is a U.S. non-profit "founded in 1992 by a group of foreigners living in Bolivia concerned about the negative impacts of the US sponsored War on Drugs" and they have sent me this informative and impacting letter.

One hundred thirteen Peace Corps volunteers have been evacuated out of Bolivia, due to the violent crisis that was intended to overthrow President Evo Morales, and which failed, fortunately. But the Bush administration want the world believe things are a bit different in the Andean nation:

"[...] The official message of the U.S. about the safety of Americans in Bolivia at this time would have the world believe that there is a real threat. The most recent Department of state Travel Warning states, “The Department of State has authorized the departure of non-emergency personnel and all family members of U.S. Embassy personnel in Bolivia and suggests all U.S. citizens defer non-essential travel to Bolivia. U.S. citizens currently in Bolivia should remain vigilant, monitor local media, review their security posture on a regular basis, and consider departing if the situation allows.”

American Airlines has once again suspended flights to and from the country. Apparently, there is an effort to inaccurately characterize the expulsion of Ambassador Goldberg as part of an overall anti-American initiative on the part of the Morales administration. This distorted image has been further emphasized by the State Department's decision to evacuate Peace Corps volunteers in Bolivia.

American citizens continue to lead their everyday lives here. Furthermore, U.S. State Department claims that volunteers were in danger give the impression that the Bolivian government and citizens opposed their efforts. This is an inaccurate portrayal. As the following letter demonstrates, Peace Corps volunteers throughout the country continued to have positive experiences until their removal."

Now please read this letter. American citizens and other foreigners have been evacuated to Lima, Peru in the recent weeks, in an effort to "save" them from a possible violent crisis. This was done after Bolivia's President Evo Morales declared the US Ambassador "Persona Non Grata" and separatists groups from the low-land Amazon region killed Indigenous farmers. Those US backed racist groups are trying to secede from Bolivia, but currently the Morales administration is holding peace talks with the mentioned groups.

    Sent: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 8:30 PM

    Subject: Evacuation Update

    Dear Family and Friends,

First of all, greetings from Peru! Secondly, I am completely safe. As you may have already heard, there were recent bursts of violence in Bolivia and US-Bolivian relations are deteriorating. The US ambassador to Bolivia was told to leave the country and the US responded in kind, magnifying the blow by withdrawing Peace Corps and adding Bolivia to a list of countries who've ""failed demonstrably" to meet their anti-narcotics obligations.

Looking at articles about our evacuation, you may be inclined to think that Peace Corps Bolivia was suspended because violence presented a security risk to volunteers. CNN, for example placed a photo of Bolivian police in La Paz wearing riot gear in their story "Peace Corps temporarily out of Bolivia." They do not mention that volunteers do not live in nor passed anywhere near La Paz and in fact are prohibited from going near any protests.

Many Peace Corps Bolivia volunteers were very surprised to learn of our evacuation because they had felt no effects of instability in their sites. Even the volunteer from the supposedly disastrous city of Villamontes was shocked, having just written her family saying "Please don't worry about me. Despite the fact that things recently have been a little tense, rest assured I am completely safe. This is my home now. The town knows me and my host family makes sure I stay out of trouble." All the same, I agree that being overly cautious is wise in Bolivia, since situations can change very rapidly. Safety concerns were cited by Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter as the reason for our departure. And they probably were the main motivator, though not the only one.

Peace Corps, unfortunately, has become another weapon in the US diplomatic arsenal. To withdrawal Peace Corps is one more chance for the US to maintain its tough image and hit back, harder. I have profound respect for Ambassador Philip Goldberg, but he was sent to Bolivia to be the stern face of the Bush administration to a wayward nation. The ambassador he did his job, rising to every single bait thrown out by Bolivian government and appearing in Bolivian news almost daily. President Evo Morales was able to build a case for his supporters against the US, and the rest is history. As US-Bolivia relations chill, it's prudent to evaluate the path we have chosen. The "tough talk" approach has left us with little chance to appeal to the general Bolivian public, worse off than when we began.

The third motivator for our departure was economic. Like any good organization, Peace Corps must carefully consider it finances. Costs spent activating emergency plans, last minute flight expenses, and numerous hotel bills were no doubt taken into account. Had the Peace Corps program actually been doubled, as promised in President George W. Bush's 2002 State of the Union Address, this would not be much of an issue. However, due to the budget cuts and the seemingly endless tumbling of the dollar, Peace Corps is like the proverbial hippie friend, a little strapped for cash and willing to cut corners.

All former Peace Corps Bolivia volunteers are currently in Peru navigating close-of-service paperwork and medical exams. There is no overall group mood, and reactions vary widely depending on with whom you are talking. I am heavy-hearted. At the beginning I was sad to leave my Bolivian "mom," my dog, and my lifestyle. Now, I am more upset to leave what I would consider to be the most important work I have ever done or will ever do.

More than ever, Bolivia needs living examples of real Americans. They need someone to dispel the myths, to let them decide for themselves about "the empire" based on first-hand experience rather than on what they were told. They need someone to help, not for financial gains, but because the task exists and because it's the right thing to do.

When I first got to Muyupampa, Bolivia over a year ago, I was walking along the street when a 3rd grade girl yelled "Gringa!" at me. I stopped and turned around, giving her a better look. Filled with curiosity, she stared. "Sarah" I said, smiled, and walked away. As the days went on she never stopped greeting me, but over time the greetings went from "Sarah" to "Sarita" and finally "Sarita!" accompanied by a big grin. The day before I was evacuated, she ran up for her hug and then we walked a block holding hands, talking about school.

Everyone has a different plan for their life after Peace Corps Bolivia. Some of the 113 will sign up for training and another 2 full years in another country. Others will try to serve for a full year or the remainder of the Peace Corps time in new nation. Others will go home. Many have expressed a desire to go right back to Bolivia after we wrap up our paper work....to say proper goodbyes, finish or assure the completion of projects in progress, get pets, etc. I plan to be among them. Would we, as rational people, plan to return to a perilous war zone? No. Would we go back to a partially destabilized nation to finish the most important job we could ever do for both our countries? In a heartbeat.

    Hope to see you soon,
    Sarah

Thank you Sarah for your honesty and courage. It is important that the world know there are Americans like you who are not represented by the Bush administration and the Republican fascists who are trying to divide Bolivia, so they can take over its natural resources. Yusulpayki, Ingeniera Nourse!

Democracy Now! reports:

Evo Morales Accuses Right-Wing Governors of Trying to Stage Violent Coup; 30 Dead, Many Still Missing in Pando

A fragile dialogue between the Bolivian government and its opponents seemed to inch forward Tuesday as President Evo Morales and opposition governors from the countrys restive eastern provinces agreed to begin talks. They had previously appeared to break down when the Bolivian army arrested one of the opposition governors, Leopoldo Fernandez from the rightist Podemos opposition party. The attorney general accused the governor of genocide. He had governed the province of Pando, where between fifteen and thirty pro-Morales peasants were killed last week. Meanwhile, the Peace Corps has withdrawn its 2,500 volunteers from Bolivia, and the US State Department is organizing at least two evacuation flights for US citizens who want to leave the country.

Videos and photos of protests in DC against the Colombia FTA and President Uribe

The visit of Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe to the US to promote the Colombia Free Trade Agreement has been nearly a fiasco.

US Congress members widely ignored Uribe, and the soon-to-be President Barack Obama told him -again- that once elected he won't favor the Colombia FTA, while public protests occurred in DC and NYC.

But today, an emergency meeting of Bush with 11 Latin American Heads of State was held by the Council of the Americas, the right-wing think thank that promotes neo-liberal economic policies in Latin America.

This is a video I made along with photos from the Qixote Center-Alliance for Responsible Trade, and two articles published by the Latin American and Caribbean Cultural Center and NYC Indymedia:

The video shows images the successful pickets protest at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. against the Colombia FTA and against Uribe, a cruel and abusive leader who has caused the disgrace and death of so many innocent Colombians, especially Afro descendants and Indigenous peoples.

I was at the protest and I managed to get in the National Press Club luncheon where Alvaro Uribe was convincing the attendees who were mostly his supporters given the times they clapped for no reason, with his innocent-looking face and his talent for the spoken word even when he tells mostly lies.

. .

This article by Felicia Montgomery -who appeared in the video- was posted by the LACCC Latin American and Caribbean Cultural Center:

Over 100 activists gather to protest Free Trade Agreement

By Felicia Montgomery and Janvieve Williams

On Friday, September 19, 2008, over 100 activists gathered in front of the National Press Club in Washington, DC to protest the efforts of Colombia’s president Álvaro Uribe to promote the Free Trade Agreement. One protester commented on the amount of different faces she saw at the protest, noting the growing coalition of activist joining together to oppose this agreement.

The organizers, Public Citizen, AFRODES, TransAfrica, Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), and the Teamsters declare the event victorious in that they were able to raise awareness on trade issues with Colombia and the current humanitarian situation that the FTA would further deteriorate in Colombia if it were to pass.

The demonstrators raised a few key points at the protest: the US should not pass the FTA because union leaders are being killed in Colombia, the environment is under attack by monocrop industries, and Afro and Indigenous Colombians are being violently displaced from their ancestral lands.

The groups sited that the FTA compromises human rights and self-determination of the most affected communities in Colombia. Protesters held up pictures of fallen union leaders and others who spoke up for their communities in Colombia. They also shared stories of family and friends who were violently displaced and continue to live in fear of their life.

Despite these accounts, President Uribe contends that Colombia is safe. Carlos Quiroz of Muchikapaec Culture-Art-Community infiltrated Uribe’s swank luncheon and reported that Uribe insists “’there are no paramilitary in Colombia anymore’ and made it look like replacement of coca crops are being successful with the oil palm new ‘small farmers owned’ plantations. He also said the human rights are well respected in Colombia”.

In continuation with the misinformation campaign, Uribe only answered pre-approved questions, a shut out of free press. He had free reign to give his version of a successful Plan Colombia and dire need to pass the Free Trade Agreement with no opposing or challenging questions.

About 8 counter protestors were at the rally in favor of Uribe. Regardless of their small numbers, they received a lot of mainstream media attention. They seemed very startled to hear the protestors call Uribe a fascist and terrorist. They seemed very distant from the issues at hand, rather pro-Colombia and pro-Uribe. Patriotism for those who recognize the grave state of human rights in Colombia is shown in a different way. While some accept things as they are and turn a blind eye to violence, human rights violations, and environmental degradation, others choose to fight for a better Colombia.

Also in NYC, as my friend Adam Weissman, shared this note via Facebook and published by NYC Indymedia:

TradeJustice Activists Disrupt Waldorf-Astoria Reception for Death Squad-Linked Colombian President to Protest Colombia NAFTA Expansion

New York, NY – Today [Thursday 24] at approximately 1:30 PM, two activists from Trade Justice New York City Metro disrupted a Council of the Americas-sponsored reception for Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Velez to denounce Uribe’s support for a free trade agreement between the US and Colombia, that critics believe will exacerbate human rights and environmental catastrophes in the war-torn South American nation.

Activists entered the reception in the Waldorf=Astoria’s Jade Room and shouted, “No Free Trade Agreement with Uribe’s death squad government! Over 100 union organizers have been killed in the last 2 years in Colombia! Uribe is lying about demobilizing the death squads! The free trade agreement will mean more Afro-Colombian communities displaced for oil palm plantations and more indigenous people displaced for oil pipelines!” The disruption was supported by a street picket.

The US-Colombia Free Trade Agreement has been widely condemned by human rights groups, labor unions, environmentalists, AIDS activists, animal rights advocates, family farm organizations, peace groups, religious leaders, and advocates of Colombia’s Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities.

The agreement will allow US agribusiness to dump genetically engineered, industrially produced, factory farmed, government subsidized crops and animal products onto Colombia’s market, displacing family farmers and driving them to coca production for the global cocaine trade. This will fuel US aerial fumigation programs that have poisoned people, wildlife, and the Amazon rainforest.

State-investor provisions in the agreement give corporations the right to sue the US and Colombian governments for unlimited sums in international tribunals for enforcing their environmental and labor laws, despite Colombia’s abysmal record on these issues. Colombia has the highest rate of unionist assassinations on the planet, the work of right-wing paramilitary death squads with close ties to the Uribe administration. Despite Uribe’s rhetoric of ending impunity towards unionist killings, there have been more killings so far this year than in all of last year.

Colombia’s Amazon rainforests and Andean cloudforests have been subject to exploitation by oil corporations, spilling vast amounts of oil into the sensitive Amazon rainforest, creating a conflict flashpoint for the decades long Colombian civil war, and leading to the displacement of Colombia’s indigenous communities.

Colombia has the 2nd highest rate of internal displacement on the planet after the Sudan, the result of mass-displacement of Afro-Colombian communities, as terror groups seize lands for lucrative oil palm plantations for the biofuels market. The free trade agreement encourages corporate investment in projects like biofuels, while allowing corporations to circumvent environmental laws through the state-investor provisions.

Intellectual property rules in the agreement will allow corporations to enforce patent protections that will limit access to generic drugs while maintaining prices on brand name drugs that will make the Colombian poor unable to afford life-saving medications.

Free trade agreements have failed to deliver their promised benefits, contributing instead to an increasing concentration of wealth while contributing to unemployment and lower wages for family farmers and working people. A majority of Republican and Democractic voters now oppose NAFTA-style policies. President Uribe is aggressively lobbying the US Congress to pass a free trade agreement in December, when voters will no longer have the power to hold the outgoing Congress accountable for their votes on an unpopular trade agreement.

According to Phil Josselyn, “ NAFTA caused massive industrial job flight as corporations saw an opportunity to outsource jobs to unionbusting sweatshops to paying living wages or providing safe working condition. A nation where thousands of trade unionists have been assassinated for demanding rights for workers is paradise for greedy corporations that want cheap labor and will mean more outsourcing and layoffs for US workers.”

Uribe’s closest allies are implicated in the “Parauribismo” (Uribe paramilitary) scandal, with over 62 members of Congress official suspects. 33 elected officials, including Mario Uribe Escobar, President Uribe's cousin and former President of Congress, were in jail awaiting trial. The scandal revealed close ties between government officials and the right-wing AUC, including accusations that Uribe helped plan a paramilitary massacre in 1997, charges Uribe denies.

TradeJustice New York Metro is a coalition of peace, environmental, labor, human rights, animal rights, AIDS activist, and Colombian and other Latin American community organizations opposed to free trade agreements in the NAFTA model.

And my friend Gimena just sent me this excellent video, where Ivette Pena Lopes from Teamsters :

Fiesta DC and the false Hispanic identity

Fiesta DC is a very attractive and all around fun street festival, held annually in the historic neighborhood of Mount Pleasant, in NW Washington, DC. Fiesta DC includes live music and dance performances, food and informative booths. Some say this festival attracts as many as 80.000 people all day long, which make it one of the most attended street festivals in DC.

Fiesta DC 2007. Photo by The42Bus

The problem with Fiesta DC is that it focuses on promoting this “Latino / Hispanic” identities, created by the U.S. government, in some way to group all the ethnic and cultural groups of the regions south of the U.S.-Mexico border, and their descendants. It's a way to separate the Anglos.

The message of this identity implies the false idea that if you speak Spanish, then all your heritages are deleted and you become a person of Latin and Hispanic background. Fiesta DC reinforces wrong ideas and perceptions of who we are as people.

Five centuries after the European invasion of this continent, and thanks to the Nixon administration (who else?) we the original people of this continent called America, are grouped in with names that we didn’t choose. If you are brown-skinned, you look “Mexican”, or you come from Latin America –then you are a Hispanic or a Latino person. Forget about anything else.

Hispanic comes from the people and cultures of Hispania, the Roman province that included Spain and Portugal. Latino is Spanish for Latin, the southern European culture started by the Romans. I can deal with the Latino term, because it comes also from the region Latin America, and it's widely used in our streets and communities, especially in the East Coast biggest cities. Hispanic is a no, no.

What do Native and Black people of the Americas have to do with Hispanics? Not a lot. If you have been to Spain, Portugal, France, Italy or Greece, then you know this. Unfortunately, for most Americans the rest of the world is grouped in very simple regions and areas, each of them with their own stereotypes: it makes it easy for people in the U.S. to understand that the world doesn’t end in Mexico or Canada.

So it doesn’t matter that an Afro descendant from Colombia has little in common with an Italian from Argentina, or an Andean Peruvian with a Japanese from Sao Paulo, Brazil. As long as we all speak Spanish or Portuguese - that is enough to put all of us together.

What about Filipinos or West Africans? Some of them also speak Spanish. Perhaps the U.S. and Canada indigenous Cherokee, Dakota, Navajo or Seminole should be called Anglos, since they all speak English mostly, don’t they? But the first nations peoples of North America know well they are not Anglos, even if they are of mixed race.

However, when it comes to Native peoples from Mexico, Central and South America, it’s all about erasing the collective memory of ourselves, and making us think that WE are all part of the same European origins as the slavers of our ancestors. This is what being called Hispanic or Latino does.

That is why the “Hispanic Heritage Month” is celebrated every year in the U.S. beginning September 15 this US government-backed program includes ellaborated festivals, ceremonies and what not. They are organized and financed widely by the federal and local agencies, with avid politicians willing to content anyone in order to get more votes.

So there is not a single "progressive" authority nor a greedy corporation who would let this chance go, and they unlimit their resources in order to promote this fake identity. They go and help these “Hispanic/Latino” groups to collect money from people, and organize these festivals that make no much of a good impact among our communities.

Now the problem with these false identities, is that our youth born and raised in the U.S. are victims of this self loathing racism. Natives and African descendant peoples who speak Spanish –or descend from those- are the lowest-paid workers in the US, we have the highest rate of high school dropouts, we show the highest levels of urban violence, including domestic and street related crime and we own less businesses and homes.

If you come this weekend to Fiesta DC or any other "Hispanic" festivals around the U.S., then you will witness a theatrical where people from difference races and traditions are mixed up all together, like a forced melting pot. Pay special attention on the fake spectacles they present in order to content the “European way” of what the world should look like.

You will see Africans and Natives peoples presented as Hispanics, performing according to the taste of Anglo Americans. You will see our food, music and dances, our traditions presented as if they were invented by Spaniards or Latins, but there won't be a mention that we "Latinos" are also Native Americans and African Americans.

Don’t miss out also the parade with the flags of post-colonial "Latin American" countries, which make up the most unfair region of the world. In those nations the [mostly White] elites control de misfortune of those of us who happen to be dark-skinned. In the U.S. we just love to carry out the flags of the nations we left in disbelief and frustration, we love the countries that displaced us with poverty and merciless violence.

Fiesta DC has a wide range of events, including a children stage sponsored by McDonald's (!), a science fair so you don't think we are dumb, and two "Rumba" and "Fiesta" stages for the musicians and dancers. Finally but most importantly, there will be a Food vendor area which (I can see it now) will end full of trash and emptied cans of liquor that will be -not officially- for sale.

The Georgetown Flea Market returned to its original and beloved neighborhood

I have always loved antiques and art objects - I am an artist myself: paintings and drawings. Also I am fond of urban traditions and spaces, of those things that people do in order to identify themselves with their environment. A city without traditions, is a city without soul.

So when a dear friend asked me to make a video of the reopening ceremony of the Georgetown Flea Market, I was more than delighted. This is a market that is a symbol for a neighborhood that waited 2 years to see it back, and it's a way for the neighbors of Georgetown and other DC areas, to meet every weekend and keep a beautiful tradition that makes DC so special and diverse.

Here is the first video I made:

. .

Also I posted it on Vimeo and Youtube.

The homecoming of a special market

(*) Text by Carlos A. Quiroz with information extracted from: Georgetown Flea Market and the DC Government

During two years, the Georgetown Flea Market Washington, DC's longest-running outdoor flea and best antiques and collectibles market- moved temporally to rlington, Virginia but last September 7, 2008 the 36-year-old antique market returned at its traditional location, the newly-renovated Hardy Middle School, in Washington, DC.

This video shows images from the "Official Homecome Celebration" celebrated last Sunday, September 21, with the participation the markets founder Michael Sussman, DC Councilmembers Jim Graham (Ward 1) and Jack Evans (Ward 2), neighbors and long-time faithful vendors and customers.

The market meets every Sunday from 8:00am. to 4:00pm. at Hardy Middle School, located at 1819 35th Street NW, at Wisconsin Avenue NW across from the Social Safeway.

Fifty dealers participate selling antique and vintage wares: furniture, rugs, art, books, maps, mirrors, sterling and silverplate, fine and costume jewelry, table linens, china, flatware, lamps, vases, linens, clothing, garden ornaments, architectural elements and political memorabilia.

The Georgetown Flea Market was founded in 1973 by lifelong collector Michael Sussman. "I wanted to create a vibrant marketplace where people could buy, sell and hang out. Today, with the economy and the environment in such trouble, it remains the perfect place to find a bargain and save the planet. Go green! Buy antiques."

DC City Councilman Jim Graham, who fought hard to return the market to Hardy Middle School, said "The Georgetown Flea Market should be in Georgetown. It really contributes to Washington's vitality. I'm glad the city honored its promise to bring back the market."

This is DCs favorite haunt of area collectors, decorators, antiques dealers, tourists and celebrities, including actress Diane Keaton and Pulitzer prize-winning author Larry McMurtry, whose novel, "Cadillac Jack," a classic tale of the previously-owned, is partly set in Georgetown.

For those collectors in Arlington, there will still be dealers in Clarendon on Saturdays and Sundays, too.

Go see Battle in Seattle the movie and spread the word!

A fiction drama based on true history, Battle in Seattle tells the story of a dozen characters whose lives came together during the historic protests that occurred on in Seattle, during the World Trade Organization summit in 1999, which derailed the WTO’s expansion.

The protests were achieved after months of planning and organizing through cell phones and internet. Over 50.000 people took the streets of Seattle to express their opposition to the expansion of unfair commerce rules imposed by rich countries to poor nations -known as neo-liberalism and "free trade" policies- which cause the destruction of the world's environment, blocking healthcare systems, promoting child exploitation, reducing labor and women's rights, promoting imperialism, cultural manipulation, agribusinesses, favoring corporations before people, the privatization of important and strategic state-owned companies and increasing the debt of poor nations.

Written and directed by Stuart Townsend, staring Andre Benjamin, Woody Harrelson, Martin Henderson, Ray Liotta, Connie Nielsen, Michelle Rodriguez, Channing Tatum, Charlize Theron and others, this film is a must-see to learn the history of social justice movements in the US and the world, and a movie that many politicians and corporate moguls don’t want you to see.

BATTLE IN SEATTLE
Official Trailer

What happened in 1999?

From the BIS movie website:

The '99 Seattle protests were commonly referred to in the popular media as the "Seattle Riots," though in fact they were a highly organized series of nonviolent actions by a diverse array of public interests -- labor unions, religious groups, student organizations, anarchists, environmentalists and national and international nonprofit organizations -- all of whom shared a common enemy, the WTO. [This] was in fact a pinnacle moment in the history of social action -- many groups coming together to voice their concerns over globalization and corporate control of trade. This was the first protest primarily organized through cell phones and the internet, giving activists an unprecedented ability to organize on the streets. It took months for organizers to plan the protests, and it is now widely held as the most successful "mass action" to date.

After the 1999 protest, Seattle had to deal with 500 arrests, $17 million in lost pre-Christmas shopping revenue, and nearly $3 million in property damage. The city not only dropped most of the charges against protesters but was also forced to pay them $1 million to compensate for their unlawful arrests and denial of civil rights. The city was forced to revamp their police training. In the weeks following the protests, graffiti showed up around the city saying, “Don’t forget. We are winning.”

    What is the WTO?

The World Trade Organization is a global commerce agency that went into effect on Jan. 1, 1995. The WTO administers 17 different commercial agreements, including the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS)[...] National policies and laws found to violate WTO rules must be eliminated or changed, or the violating country faces trade sanctions.

[...]Some corporations and G-8 governments (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) maintain that the WTO reduces trade disputes[.] But social justice advocates argue that the WTO’s prioritization of trade above development and environmental goals benefit primarily the special interests profiting from this model of globalization.

“The IMF, World Bank, and WTO all work together in an iron triangle to carry out the corporate agenda of privatization, deregulation, and “free” trade… This triangle caters to the interests of transnational corporations above and beyond the interests of all other aspects of life… Under the guise of promoting economic growth, financial stability and development, the World Bank and IMF have forced more than 60 countries to open up their forests, minerals, fisheries, agricultural land, workforce, and financial markets to foreign investors without regard to domestic priorities such as food security; universal education and healthcare; the needs of local communities and domestic businesses; protections for workers, women, and marginalized peoples; and the limits on nature’s capacity to be exploited and polluted.” - Anita Roddick, Take It Personally

The campaign staff of John McCain are a bunch of corrupted lobbyists

It is the truth. These are not false accusations from Obama campaign ads. Read this post and see how important is your vote against McCain.

IT'S OVER

HIS FRIENDS

Richard “Rick” H. Davis
Campaign Manager

Davis lobbying firm – Davis, Manafort Inc. – has made at least $2.8 million lobbying Congress since 1998.” [Politico, 7/11/07]

Rick Davis, a partner in the lobbying firm Davis Manafort, currently serves as Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) campaign manager. (He managed McCain's 2000 campaign as well.) A former aide in the Reagan administration and the deputy manager of Sen. Bob Dole's (R-KS) 1996 campaign, Davis' dual role as a political operative and as a lobbyist has caused controversy. During the 2000 campaign, critics noted that two of the companies his firm represented, SBC Communications and Comsat, had controversial mergers pending at the Federal Communications Commission. The Senate Commerce Committee, which McCain chaired at the time, oversees the FCC. Davis tenure as head of the McCain-affiliated Reform Institute, where he solicited tens of thousands of dollars in contributions for the Institute from communications companies, has also come under scrutiny.

Davis earned $110,000 a year from the Institute while still serving as McCain top political advisor. Davis has faced other controversies as well. During the current campaign, rivals accused him of self-dealing, noting that the McCain campaign had hired a company he partly owns, 3eDC, to provide Internet services. Davis did not initially disclose his interest to McCain. Davis also came under fire recently when it was revealed that he had arranged a 2006 meeting between McCain and Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska. Deripaska, critics noted, is not only one of the richest men in Russia and an ally of Vladimir Putin, but has also been linked to organized crime and had his American visa revoked. Nevertheless, Deripaska is not the only shady figure to benefit from close relations with Davis. Davis Manafort has also done political consulting for former Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, who had close ties to Putin and was defeated in that country's 2004 Orange Revolution. Other recent lobbying clients include Verizon, GTECH, and Airborne Express.

Charles Black
Senior Advisor

Charlie Black of BKSH & Associates, a Bush Pioneer in 2004, is perhaps the most experienced and respected Republican lobbyist in Washington, D.C. He is a close friend of former president George H.W. Bush and has served as an adviser to presidents Reagan and George W. Bush, as well as working as official spokesman for the Republican National Committee. Recent reports about his work for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) observed that, prior to taking a leave of absence, he did a lot of his lobbying work from the back of McCain's campaign bus. He certainly has had a lot of clients to manage, many of whom have pressing business in Washington. Over the years his client list has included Ahmed Chalabi and the Iraqi National Congress, Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party, the China National Off-Shore Oil Corp, Zaire dictator Mobutu Sese Seko and Angolan rebel Jonas Savimbi. Black has also said that he sees great opportunities for lobbyists in Iraq and has considered opening up a branch of his office there. "Is there too much cronyism?" he asked, referring to Iraq. "I just wish I could find the cronies."

William “Phil” Philip Gramm
Economic Advisor and architect of McCain Economic Plan

Phil Gramm, a former Republican senator from Texas, currently serves as vice chairman of investment firm UBS Warburg. His role advising Sen. McCain on economic policy has recently been criticized for two reasons: he was largely responsible for the lax regulations that led to the Enron debacle, and his current employer has been embroiled in the subprime mortgage crisis. In 2004, Gramm encountered criticism from Texas Democrats for supposed illegal lobbying for a plan to bail out the state's teacher pension fund. According to critics, Gramm failed to register as a lobbyist before taking up the issue. Gramm's name has come up in other scandals as well.

During the 2006 corruption trial of Republican Illinois Gov. George Ryan, Ryan accused Gramm's congressional staff of giving thousands of dollars in donations to Ryan in exchange for an endorsement for Gramm's aborted 1996 presidential campaign. Asked about the propriety of such an arrangement, Gramm said, "It's a difference between love and prostitution." Gramm was also tied into the collapse of Enron. His wife, Wendy Gramm, had served on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, where she helped write regulations that removed oversight of companies like Enron. She then took a seat on the company's board, while Enron employees gave $95,000 in contributions to Gramm's campaigns. Gramm's role as an economic advisor to the McCain campaign and his public presence on the campaign trail were both reduced in July after Gramm said the country was in a "mental recession" and had become a nation of "whiners." Gramm is no stranger to excessive fundraising. In 1996 in his failed run for the Republican presidential nomination, Gramm raised a then-record-setting $4.1 million at one event to kick off his campaign, at which he declared, "I have the most reliable friend you can have in American politics, and that's ready money." As a bundler, he has raised at least $100,000 for McCain's presidential campaign, according to information released by the campaign.

For a complete look at Phil Gramm's lobbying activities, please visit the non-partisan Center For Responsive Politics' money-in-politics database. Also read Gramm’s profile at Mclobbyist.

Randy Scheunemann
Chief Foreign Policy Advisor

Randy Scheunemann, a foreign policy advisor to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign who heads Scheunemann & Associates, has worked on behalf of numerous high profile clients, including the National Rifle Association, Lockheed Martin and BP.

However, it is his work for Texas businessman Stephen Payne that has garnered the most attention. Two of Payne’s firms, Worldwide Strategic Partners Inc. and the Caspian Alliance, paid Scheunemann to lobby Congress, the State Department and the National Security Council on their behalf in connection to energy issues. According to The Sunday Times of London, Payne offered to give the former president of Kyrgyzstan access to President Bush and Vice President Cheney in exchange for a $250,000 donation to Bush’s presidential library and a $450,000 payment to his lobbying firm. Payne was recorded as saying that Scheunemann had been on his payroll for five of the past eight years. His work with Baltic countries has also included efforts on behalf of Georgia, which paid another Scheunemann firm, Orion Strategies, to help the former Soviet republic win admission to NATO. The firm met or spoke to McCain and his staff dozens of times between 2001 and 2008, and made regular political contributions to McCain’s campaign and PAC. The hard work apparently paid off: In 2006, McCain co-sponsored legislation encouraging Georgia’s admission to NATO, and he has been a vocal supporter of the country during his presidential campaign. Scheunemann was also a prominent supporter of invading Iraq, having served as a board member of the Project for a New American Century and a founder of the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq.

For a complete look at Randy Scheunemann’s lobbying activities, please visit the non-partisan Center For Responsive Politics’ money-in-politics database. Also read Scheunemann’s profile at Mclobbyist.

Nancy Pfotenhauer
Senior Policy Advisor

Pfotenhauer lobbied on behalf of gas pipeline operator Koch Industries when it received the biggest civil fine in the history of the Clean Water Act for leaking 3 million gallons of oil into lakes and streams. Today she's McCain's senior policy adviser.

Pfotenhauer Lobbied for Koch Industries Until End of 2000 under her maiden name Nancy Mitchell as a member of its in-house government affairs department. Pfotenhauer’s Lobbying Focused On Pipeline Safety Standards. Most of Pfotenhauser’s lobbying was focused on gas pipelines, in particular safety issues. In 1999, she lobbied for a bill to make more valuable tax depreciation rules for natural gas gathering lines In 2000, she lobbied on a number of pipeline measure including: S.2004, a proposal to expand state authority on pipeline safety and establish new federal requirements to improve pipeline safety, as well as and S.2438, the (King & Tsiorvas) Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2000, which would also set new standards to ensure pipeline safety.

In January 2000, the Environmental Protection Agency reached “a landmark $35 million
settlement,” with Koch Industries, “one of the country’s largest oil pipeline operators.” In the “biggest civil fine ever levied under the Clean Water Act,” Koch “agreed to pay the penalties for leaking 3 million gallons of oil into lakes and streams in six states.” The EPA-Koch “settlement resolved two lawsuits charging that for years Koch’s pipeline subsidiary had left thousands of miles of pipeline in disrepair, leading to hundreds of oil leaks.” In official complaints, the government “Koch could have prevented most of the spills, caused mainly by corrosion, through prompt maintenance and safe operations.”

McCain Sponsored Pipeline Safety Bill on Which Pfotenhauer Lobbied. According to Senate records, McCain sponsored one of the pipeline bills on which Pfotenhauer lobbied, S.2438, the (King & Tsiorvas) Pipeline Safety Improvement Act in April of 2000. Pfotenhauer lobbied the House and Senate on a variety of issues relating to taxation, appropriations, and infrastructure. According to lobbying disclosures, Pfotenhauer lobbied on the estate tax; tax exempt private activity for highway infrastructure construction.

See Pfotenhauer’s profile at Mclobbyist.

Frank J. Donatelli
Deputy Chair of Republican National Committee

Frank Donatelli is Executive Vice President and Director of Public Affairs for McGuireWoods Consulting, a D.C. lobbying firm. He was previously a partner at another lobbying firm – Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld. Prior to his lucrative lobbying career, Donatelli served in the Reagan White House. Donatelli Lobbied for Telecom Companies with Business before McCain’s Committees. Senate Lobbying Disclosure records show that Frank Donatelli has lobbied for major telecommunications companies with business before the Senate Commerce Committee, which McCain chaired, including AT&T, Time Warner and Verizon.

Donatelli as Top Energy Lobbyist for energy company Dominion Resources, and on offshore drilling legislation, pipeline safety, and energy reform legislation. Also lobbyin on Yucca Mountain nuclear storage, oil industry tax credits, on Behalf of Exxon Until 1999, Earning Firm $780,000. He helped win approval of $81 Billion Exxon merger with Mobil, Which Created Largest Oil Company in the World. Donatelli Lobbied for AT &T in all policy issues relating to the telecommunications industry at the Senate Commerce Committee, of which McCain was chairman.

According to the American Prospect: “At a Washington fundraiser hosted by advisor Vin Weber, who lobbies for AT&T, McCain raised $ 120,000. A few days later, according to Associated Press reporter Jonathan Salant, McCain hinted that he would introduce a bill eliminating the role of the FCC in policing mergers. Then in May, after FCC Chairman William Kennard had said that AT&T’s purchase of MediaOne ‘warrants careful scrutiny,’ McCain introduced this bill. Within two weeks, McCain received 10 contributions of $ 1,000 from AT&T executives.” In October 1998, McCain raised another $25,800 from AT&T officials at a fund-raiser.” During this period, Donatelli was an AT&T lobbyist. Donatelli lobbying clients also have included industry giant Verizon. He also lobbied for HMO Blue Cross Blue Shield for a variety of topics included health related tax Legislation, Medicare & Medicaid, insurance regulation and health care mandates. Donatelli lobbied for pharmaceutical giant Pfizer on regulation of the use of certain antihistamines by operators of commercial vehicles. Another industry clients was the trade group PHRMA.

John Green
Capitol Hill liaison

John Green, managing director of Ogilvy Government Relations, is former deputy chief of staff to Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) and currently serves as the McCain campaign's liaison to congress. He has also served as executive director of the New Republican Majority Fund political action committee and as campaign manager for Rep. Chip Pickering (R-MS). Recent clients include AFLAC, Hess, Deutsche Post, UPS, Motorola, Verizon and the European Aeronautic Defense & Space Company (EADS). His work for EADS came under scrutiny recently after it was revealed that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) had written letters to the Defense Department asking it to reconsider a contracting requirement seen as disadvantageous to EADS. Shortly thereafter, the Defense Department made the requested change, and EADS eventually won the $35 billion contract to manufacture the next generation of in-flight refueling tanker planes. The Government Accountability Office later upheld Boeing's appeal and the project will be rebid. As a bundler, he has raised at least $50,000 for McCain's presidential campaign, according to information released by the campaign.

For a complete look at John Green's lobbying activities, please visit the non-partisan Center For Responsive Politics' money-in-politics database. Also see Green’s profile at Mclobbyist.

Wayne Berman
Vice-Chair, Advisor and Bundler, National Finance Co-Chairman

Wayne Berman, managing director of lobbying firm Ogilvy Government Relations, was a Pioneer for Bush in 2000 and a Ranger in 2004. A former assistant secretary in the Commerce Department during the Reagan administration, Berman managed Jack Kemp's vice presidential campaign in 1996. Since then he has established himself as one of Washington's most powerful and best-paid lobbyists. In 2007, the Washington Post reported that the $3.74 million in earnings Berman's firm received from a Chinese company hoping for federal approval to buy part of private equity firm Blackstone Group was the largest six-month lobbyist payday ever reported. Until recently, his wife, Lea Berman, was White House social secretary. She served previously as Lynne Cheney's chief of staff.

Among Berman's current clients are the American Petroleum Institute, AT&T, Chevron, Hess, Verizon and the European Aeronautic Defense & Space Company (EADS).

Berman has not shied away from controversy. He took a lead role in raising money for Scooter Libby's defense fund, and helped raise money for Rep. Tom DeLay's (R-TX) re-election committee after the congressman was indicted. "This is more than just a fundraiser," he said. "It's a way of saying that an important part of the Republican establishment supports Tom DeLay now and will continue to support him in the future." Berman is also well known in Connecticut for his relationship with Paul Silvester, a former state treasurer who pleaded guilty in 1999 to federal corruption charges related to his management of the state employees’ pension fund. During Silvester's tenure, he paid large "finder's fees" to Berman. Berman subsequently hired Silvester to work for his Park Strategies consulting firm. Federal investigators subpoenaed Berman's business records but no charges were filed. As a bundler, he has raised at least $500,000 for McCain's presidential campaign, according to information released by the campaign.

Protests in DC against Colombia's Alvaro Uribe and in solidarity with Bolivia

A protest against Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe will be held tomorrow in Washington, DC.

Photo The Dominion

Alvaro Uribe is trying to get support for more unfair free trade policies through a commercial deal between the US and Colombia, which has already being signed by Bush, but has received strong opposition in the US Congress.

A controversial and abusive right-wing politician with links to illegal drugs-mafias and paramilitary groups, Alvaro Uribe is widely popular in Colombia, because his interest groups control almost all the communications media (he learned well from his close friend George W. Bush) manipulating the reality of his country.

Alvaro Uribe has close ties with John McCain, his lobbyists and campaign staff, and he has welcomed McCain in a Colombia visit recently. Last month, the Uribe government sent an 80 person delegation to lobby in Congress in a last and desperate effort to pass a new NAFTA deal: the Colombia free trade agreement, before the end of the devastating Bush administration. They are attempting to fool Congress members about a "progress" on human rights in Colombia.

In Colombia of today, union leaders and social justice organizers are killed for their work and impunity reigns supreme, while hundreds of people are dying after paramilitary terrorist attacks, and millions of Afro descendants and Indigenous peoples have been displaced to favor multinational corporations and the Colombian rich elites.

Furthermore - as a friend has reminded me- this protest will be also in solidarity with Bolivia, against the racist attacks and murders of Indigenous peoples led by racist groups in connection with European immigrants backed by the US Embassy in La Paz.

Protestors will voice our disapproval on the continuous intervention of the Bush administration in Latin America, particularly in the case of Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela.

The Bush administration has continued negative and back-firing US intervention policies in Latin America's internal affairs and sovereignty, favoring its corporations and interest groups, trying to boycott progressive governments and the unity of Latino America, and placing our natural resources and people's rights on sale for the benefit of US interest groups, damaging democracy in the region.

If passed, the Colombia FTA will let more global corporations benefit from the repression of workers, will harm Afro Colombians, Indigenous peoples and small farmers, causing more displacement that promotes more illegal armed groups and drug traffickers, forcing undocumented migration. Free trade is promoting a global race to the bottom in terms of worker rights, environmental protections, food and product safety and democracy itself. Colombia would become a pipe dream for global corporations looking to exploit workers and avoid environmental regulation.

The Presidents of the Union of South American Nations (Unisur) have met this week in Santiago, Chile in support of Bolivian president Evo Morales and rejecting any foreign support for the radical groups who are pushing for an independence of the low-land regions, rich in oil, gas and other natural resources.

From Public Citizen:

Take action: Stop the Colombia FTA

In early April, President Bush sent his NAFTA expansion to Colombia to Congress over the objections of Speaker Pelosi and Congressional Democrats. Speaker Pelosi reasserted congressional authority over the bill by removing the Fast Track treatment of the bill.

The Bush administration's blatant disregard for the Democratic Congress' concerns regarding the Colombia FTA spell doom for this already fatally flawed NAFTA expansion. Help us put the final nails in the coffin and urge your member of Congress to publicly oppose the Colombia FTA!

Ethnic violence and US diplomatic crisis deepens in Bolivia and Venezuela

The Bush administration continues its bully styled diplomacy towards two progressive governments of South America: Bolivia and Venezuela. US officials and both Obama and McCain are accusing Presidents Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales of the current diplomatic crisis with the US, and the internal conflicts of racial hate endured by Bolivia.

Bolivia

The government of Bolivian President Evo Morales has expelled the US Ambassador Philip Goldberg after accusing him of promoting the racist and separatist revolts conducted by groups from the "half moon" states of the Amazon lowlands. Goldberg is said to be the mastermind of the separation of former Yugoslavia, when he was an assistant to the US embassy there, and he has met several times with the leaders of the ultra right-wing groups trying to secede from Bolivia.

After a recent national referendum, President Evo Morales was successfully rectified as President of the Andean country, but racist groups from the state of Santa Cruz -promoted by Croats, Germans and other European immigrants- are trying to obtain independence from Bolivia.

Chaos and violence have taken over the streets of several cities in the last 20 days but last week riots have increased dramatically, and so far over 15 Indigenous farmers have been killed after being tortured by paramilitary groups and hundreds have been injured. Last Friday, the Bolivian government declared a "state of siege" and sent military troops to reopen blocked roads and airports, and stop violent groups.

The saddest part of this crisis is that most of the members of these racist and violent groups are young Bolivians of Indigenous heritage, but they are taught to believe they are not Indians anymore. The brainwash work has been done very well.

Venezuela

President Hugo Chavez has warned of cutting oil supplies to the US, after revealing another US-backed plan to kill him and take power with a coup d'etat. Chavez has warned the “fucking yanquis” to avoid interventions in his nation, at a time when military planes from Russia have landed in Venezuelan soil for military exercises, and the Russian Navy has also arrived to the Caribbean for similar purposes.

Meanwhile Chavez has authorized the purchase of hundreds of millions of dollars in Chinese and Russian armament, and its government has also expelled the US Ambassador Patrick Duddy. in Caracas, in solidarity with the government Bolivia. Venezuela is the fifth supplier of oil to the US, and a cut on supplies would hurt greatly both countries, especially Venezuela in times when oil prices are dropping.

Solidarity with Bolivia

Presidents of the South American Nation Union (Unasur) will meet on Monday in Santiago de Chile to try to find a solution to this crisis. Also the Organization of American States, and Bolivia neighboring countries, have expressed their support the current government of Bolivia.

The government of Honduras has also requested the recently appointed US Ambassador Hugo Llorens to leave the country, in solidarity with Bolivia. Nicaragua is likely to take the same action. Civic protests in support of Morales have been organized in Argentina and Paraguay, and Bolivians migrants are also planning on organizing other events worldwide.

The US response

The Bush administration hasn't condemned the violent paramilitary groups of Santa Cruz, while it refuses to extradite former Bolivian President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, who lives in Washington, DC. Instead, the US has ousted the Venezuelan Ambassador and accused two top intelligence officials from Venezuela of supporting “narco-terrorist activities” of rebels in South America.

Most experts and officials in the US think that Morales and Chavez are creating these crisis and using them in order to obtain more support from their constituents. However, it is obvious that the violence in Bolivia has been started by racist groups in connection with the American embassy in La Paz.

Both senators Barack Obama and John McCain have responded harshly the actions of Morales and Chavez, saying that Chavez is “provoking” the US in order to distract their population from their failures as governments. Neither of them have criticized the violent actions in Bolivia, nor the rumors of a plan to kill Chavez that might have been supported by the US.

The US remembers and honors only some of their dead

Yesterday was a day full of sad memories. The media bombed us with images of the tragic events that occurred in September 11, 2001. It was sickening.

The new Pentagon Memorial (left) was dedicated by President Bush. More photos here.

The cute note was to see presidential candidates McCain and Obama meeting in New York at Ground Zero to pay tribute to the more than 3,000 people that died on the attack. It was a message of national unity, as they placed all political differences aside. Yeah right.

But it makes me wonder why even seven years after this tragedy, groups are still demanding for the US government to come forward about who really planned this attack, because none of the criminals have been arrested for it yet. Some Americans even claim that is time to stop exploiting the victims relatives pain.

It is no coincidence for example, that the Bush administration waited until this election year to inaugurate a memorial of remembrance to the fallen at the Pentagon, here in Washington, DC.

Personally, I feel that most of these annual tributes to the 9/11 victims are a bit fake and exaggerated -is not that these ceremonies are not well deserved- but this is a country where urban violence occurs daily causing thousands of fatalities. And nobody seems to care. It’s a sad contradiction.

According to the FBI, only in Washington, DC nearly 6.000 people died in 2006 due to violent crimes related to drugs, guns, teenage gangs, robbery, rape, burglary, etc. But the US government doesn’t build memorials nor hosts special ceremonies for those people, who usually live in slums. The trend shows that urban violence is on the rise in America. Is that the reason why the US has the highest rate of incarcerated people in the world?

What about the thousands of undocumented immigrants who have died in the border with Mexico, either out of hunger or by some racist Minutemen's gun shot. Well I forgot that life for some in the US is less important when it comes to foreigners, that is why very few media talk about how many Iraqi people have died in the oil war.

Because some Americans love to use patriotism in order to blind its people about issues from the rest of the world. They use it to distract us. To celebrate for example the heroism of John McCain during the Vietnam War -yes he was a brave soldier- is to ignore that it was a useless and unjustified war where millions of innocent Vietnamese people were massacred.

It is proven that for better or worse, these patriotic imagery influences politics and elections. It won’t surprise me at all if Bush announces that Bin Laden has been captured, on the eve of Election Day.

While today most of the focus in the US is on foreign terrorism, I am disgusted to see how little the Bush government is doing to stop urban violence and the killing of its people by its own people, who are mostly non-white Americans by the way. Well, I kind of know the answer but I just wanted you to think about it.

Will we ever see a memorial dedicated to the street violence in DC? In a city with so many foreign war memorials, people seem not to be aware that an internal war occurs every day out there. A war where the enemy is within our own communities as we are lead by fake leaders and we are used to life styles that are killing our children.
